Died at polling booth
Peaceful voting took place in a single phase for 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra on Wednesday, but meanwhile a news spread grief in the political corridors. During the voting, independent candidate from Beed, Balasaheb Shinde, who was present at the polling booth, died of a heart attack. Police said that the independent candidate suffered a heart attack when he was waiting for his turn to vote at the polling booth. He was immediately taken to the hospital where doctors declared Shinde dead.
Balasaheb Shinde suddenly fell on the ground
According to the information received, a polling booth was set up at Chhatrapati Shahu Vidyalaya in Beed, where Balasaheb Shinde, who was waiting for his turn, suddenly fell on the ground. He was first taken to Kaku Nana Hospital in Beed and then to Chhatrapati Shambhaji Nagar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police said that the body has been sent for post-mortem. According to the Representation of the People Act 1951, if a candidate dies during the election, voting on the concerned seat can be postponed under Section 52.
What is the rule on the death of a candidate?
Let us tell you that the Beed assembly seat was once the stronghold of Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). After the split, Ajit Pawar represents a faction of the NCP, which is in alliance with the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The main contest in Maharashtra is between the Mahayuti (led by BJP, Eknath Shinde's Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (led by Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Sena and Sharad Pawar's NCP) alliances. The election results will be out on November 23.
